PanAfrican Conference on Pastoralism: Moving Towards CSD-13

Objectives

The main objective of this Conference is to bring together African traditional scientists, governments, policy makers and public sector planning, African and foreign scholars and researchers, African and foreign CSOs, in order to discuss practical issues and share views and ideas on past trends and future directions of this particular sector. The aim is to explore, together, the merit of their knowledge and traditional capacity in order to update and build on it.

The Conference will be organized around the following six themes:
Parallel development, passive attitude of past approaches and present crisis of pastoral identity in the African continent;
Pastoralism as a basis for African economy;
Pastoralism: The last frontier of development predators/parashooters;
The role of international actors and national governments in the continued isolation/marginalization of pastoral societies;
The knowledge and talents of the traditional pastoral societies;
The place of pastoralism in future development landscape,

Fulani on the Move
Yola, Adamawa Nigeria
July 24th to July 27th, 2003

The Tabital Pulaaku organized a meeting at Yola the capital city of state of Adamawa, East Nigeria near the border between Nigeria and Cameroon.
Yola has a symbolic significance since it was provincial the capital of the Fulani Sokoto Empire in the 19th Century.
The meeting was held from July 24th to July 27th 2003. Delegations of the Tabital Pulaaku International (TPI) included groups from Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Guinea, Senegal and Europe. Distinguished guest included the former President Ibrahim Babangida, the Emir of Kano and Diplomats they came to install the new officers of the TPI and to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Lamindo Aliyu Musdafa actual Emir of Adamawa. They also came to affirm that they will propagate the Fulani culture and language, children education and conflict mediation between herders and farmers. The Tabital Pulaaku International was created in 2002 in Bamako under the impulsion of the Senegalese Writer Cheikh Hamidou Kane and the Cameroonian Hydrogeologist Kadry Yaya who is the current Chairman of the TPI.
